Crucifix Altar | Baroque Wooden Gilded Cross 1700s | 30.3"
An impressive devotional Calvary group representing the Crucifixion of Christ, accompanied by the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and the kneeling Mary Magdalene. The finely modelled figure of Christ is suspended from a tall wooden cross, his head inclined in death beneath a crown of thorns. The cross is surmounted by the traditional INRI inscription and embellished with gilded ornamental terminals. At the foot of the cross, three gilded figures form an expressive composition of mourning and devotion. The Virgin Mary stands to the left, distinguished by her halo, while Mary Magdalene kneels in the centre with an outstretched arm. Saint John stands to the right, his hands clasped in prayer. The ensemble rises from an elaborate architectural pedestal with a dark painted surface, gilded Rococo-style ornament and four spherical feet. The front is prominently decorated with the sacred IHS Christogram within a radiant glory. The restrained expression of Christ, graceful drapery and richly ornamented base evoke the devotional sculpture of the European Baroque and Rococo traditions. The sculpture displays aged surfaces, craquelure, rubbing and localised losses to the gilding and painted decoration, consistent with its historic devotional character. A visually striking example of traditional Christian devotional art, suitable for a specialist collection of European religious sculpture.
General: The cross’s overall dimensions are 30.3 inches (77 cm) high and 12.8 inches (32.5 cm) wide. The figurines are up to 7.1 inches (18 cm) in height.
Condition: The crucifix is in good condition - with aged surfaces, craquelure, rubbing and localised losses to the gilding and painted decoration, consistent with its historic devotional character.
