The richly decorated cross features fleur-de-lis terminals, a finely patterned geometric ground and small floral ornaments. At its centre is a sculptural representation of the Crucified Christ, with carefully modelled anatomy, inclined head, crown of thorns and deeply folded loincloth. Above the figure is the traditional INRI inscription. The cross is supported by a decorative twisted column rising from a broad circular pedestal, elevated on three finely modelled animal-claw feet. The harmonious proportions, warm gilded surface and combination of architectural and sculptural ornament reflect the revival of medieval artistic traditions in nineteenth-century religious furnishings. Manufactured in France for ecclesiastical or private devotional use, the crucifix represents an attractive example of historic European sacred metalwork.

General: The cross’s overall dimensions are 23 inches (58.5 cm) high and 9.1 inches (23 cm) wide.
