An impressive and richly ornamented pair of five-light candelabra, executed in gilt bronze and displaying the elaborate decorative vocabulary of the European Renaissance Revival. Each candelabrum is constructed around an elegant baluster-form central stem supporting five candleholders arranged on scrolling foliate branches. The candle sockets are decorated with classical motifs and accompanied by circular drip pans, while the central upper candleholder is surmounted by a detachable fleur-de-lis-shaped finial. Of particular distinction are the finely modelled winged female mythological figures flanking the central urn-shaped section. Their expressive faces, feathered wings and elongated ornamental forms evoke the fantastic creatures of Renaissance decorative art. The lower stems are embellished with acanthus ornament and raised upon substantial square bases enriched with scrolling foliage, pendant architectural details and four outward-curving feet. The combination of mythological imagery, architectural ornament and warm gilded surfaces gives the pair a commanding decorative presence, characteristic of the historicist interiors of late-19th-century Europe.
