A charming and evocative devotional sculpture depicting the Agnus Dei, or Lamb of God, reclining upon a rectangular base carved in the form of a closed book. The lamb is represented in a peaceful resting position, with its head raised, elongated ears and carefully articulated fleece. Its softly modelled features and expressive painted eyes lend the composition a distinctive character. The sculpture retains an aged ivory-white painted surface, with traces of darker pigments defining the facial features and hooves. Rising behind the lamb is a slender wooden staff supporting a white, swallow-tailed Resurrection banner, bordered in red and decorated with a red cross. The iconography draws upon the Book of Revelation, in which the Lamb of God is associated with the Book of the Seven Seals. The Resurrection banner signifies Christ's triumph over death, uniting the themes of sacrifice, redemption and eternal life. The sculpture rests upon a painted wooden base representing a closed sacred book, its edges carefully shaped to suggest the pages of a manuscript. With its appealing character, expressive modelling and historic painted surface, the work is an attractive example of European Christian devotional sculpture.
