An expressive and finely carved wooden devotional sculpture depicting Saint Joseph holding the infant Jesus, reflecting the enduring influence of the Baroque tradition in European religious art. Saint Joseph is represented standing upon a naturalistically carved rocky base, tenderly supporting the Christ Child in his right arm while extending his left hand in a gentle gesture of protection and paternal devotion. The saint's serene countenance is framed by flowing hair and a carefully modelled beard. Of particular distinction are Saint Joseph's original inset glass eyes, which impart remarkable depth, realism and spiritual intensity to his expression. This refined detail enhances the sculpture's lifelike character and reflects the expressive traditions of European Catholic devotional art. The infant Jesus, depicted with painted eyes, an upward gaze and a raised arm, introduces a touching sense of intimacy and movement to the composition. Saint Joseph wears a richly coloured green tunic embellished with delicate gold-coloured floral ornamentation, complemented by a flowing golden-ochre mantle. The elegantly carved folds of the garments create a harmonious interplay of movement, light and shadow. The combination of expressive facial modelling, original glass eyes and decorative polychromy recalls the theatrical character of Baroque-inspired religious sculpture, particularly within the Central European Catholic tradition. A charming and distinctive example of European devotional art, notable for its intimate iconography, original glass eyes, richly decorated garments and finely modelled facial features.
