corpus-christi-bronze-1600s-renaissance-figure-5-copy-1
Corpus Christi Bronze 1600s Renaissance | 9.6” / 24.5 cm

An expressive bronze Corpus Christi depicting Christ at the moment of death, his head inclined forward beneath outstretched arms. The composition is distinguished by its elongated proportions, restrained anatomical modelling and deeply contemplative character. Stylistically, the work recalls the transition from late Gothic devotional sculpture towards the more naturalistic forms of the Renaissance. Its elongated silhouette and restrained drapery suggest an artistic tradition rooted in the religious sculpture of Southern Europe. Originally designed for attachment to a crucifix, the figure is now presented independently on a modern metal stand, allowing appreciation of its sculptural qualities. The bronze exhibits age-related surface wear and losses to the gilded decoration. A compelling example of European Christian devotional sculpture, combining expressive restraint with the enduring symbolism of the Crucifixion.

General: The overall height with the stand is 11.6 inches (29.5 cm). The overall dimensions of the Corpus Christi figure are a height of 9.6 inches (24.5 cm), and a width of 9.3 inches (23.5 cm).

Condition: This Corpus Christi is in good condition - surface wear and patination consistent with handling and age; traces of earlier finish to the reverse.
