An evocative, substantial carved wooden figure of the crucified Christ, capturing the expressive character of European Baroque religious sculpture. Christ is depicted after his death on the cross, his head inclined in profound resignation, his eyes closed, and lips gently parted. The delicately modelled face is framed by long, flowing hair and a finely carved beard, emphasising the subject's solemnity and emotional intensity. Pale flesh tones, darkened hair and beard, traces of red pigment and muted colours within the loincloth remain visible beneath an extensively aged surface. Originally part of a larger crucifix, the figure survives without its arms and is now displayed on a modern metal stand. A compelling example of European devotional carving, distinguished by its substantial scale, expressive facial treatment and atmospheric surviving polychromy.

General: The overall height with the stand is 38.8 inches (98.5 cm). The overall dimensions of the Corpus Christi statue are a height of 34.2 inches (87 cm), a width of 9 inches (23 cm) and the metal base is 9.8 inches (25 x 25 cm) wide.

Condition: This Corpus Christi is in good condition with craquelure, flaking, abrasion, discoloration and areas of exposed wood, together with scattered minor losses. Longitudinal split extends down the reverse of the torso, following the natural grain of the timber - please see the enclosed images.
