Corpus Christi Sculpture Wood 18th/19th Century | 27.4”
An outstanding 18th/19th Century Corpus Christi (Body of Christ) wooden sculpture. An expressive carved wooden figure of Christ Crucified, distinguished by its elongated proportions, refined anatomical modelling and deeply contemplative expression. Christ is depicted with his head inclined forward, his eyes lowered and his arms raised in a dramatic crucifixion pose. The carefully rendered hair and beard frame a solemn, introspective face, conveying the suffering and spiritual dignity of the Passion. A richly folded perizonium, secured by a finely carved rope-like girdle, encircles the hips. The sculpture displays the expressive religious character and anatomical stylisation associated with European Baroque devotional carving. The figure is presented on a discreet contemporary metal stand, allowing its sculptural qualities to be appreciated in the round.
General: The overall height with the stand is 31.5 inches (80 cm). The overall dimensions of the Corpus Christi statue are a height of 27.4 inches (69.5 cm) and a width of 17.5 inches (44.5 cm).
Condition: This Corpus Christi is in good condition with no damage besides age-related wear. Please see the enclosed images.
