Memento Mori Baroque Candlestick | 18th Century | 24.4”/ 62 cm
An exceptional and visually arresting Memento Mori candlestick, distinguished by its striking composition incorporating a realistically carved wooden skull, an elaborately ornamented pedestal and an architectural candleholder. The central skull is skilfully carved from wood and finished in a pale, bone-like polychromy. Its remarkably detailed anatomical features include deeply recessed eye sockets, finely articulated teeth, prominent cheekbones and carefully delineated cranial sutures, creating a convincing representation of the human skull. The composition embodies the Christian tradition of Memento Mori, a Latin expression meaning “Remember that you must die.” Its substantial proportions, convincing anatomical carving and richly ornamented gilded base make it a distinctive addition to a collection of European religious art, ecclesiastical antiques or Memento Mori objects.
