Memento Mori | Italy 1700s Wood | 13.4”/ 34 cm
An evocative ecclesiastical Memento Mori ornament featuring a finely modelled human skull surrounded by three stylised bones, set against an elaborate radiating sunburst with remnants of gilded decoration. The skull is distinguished by its pronounced orbital cavities, carefully articulated teeth and open jaw, creating a powerful and contemplative expression. Its pale, aged surface contrasts dramatically with the warm golden rays extending outward from the central composition. The three surrounding bones form a striking geometric arrangement, reinforcing the traditional symbolism of human mortality. Rooted in the Christian Memento Mori tradition, the composition served as a visual reminder of the transience of earthly existence and the spiritual significance of death. The radiant background introduces a further dimension, suggesting divine light, hope and the promise of resurrection. The object's theatrical presentation and strong symbolic imagery are characteristic of the Baroque approach to religious art, in which mortality and salvation were frequently expressed through emotionally compelling visual forms. Originally associated with a church catafalque or other devotional setting, the ornament is now mounted on a discreet modern metal stand. An unusual and visually compelling example of European funerary symbolism, combining the solemn imagery of death with the radiant language of Baroque religious art.
