Memento Mori Wooden Statue | 1700s Antique | 16.1” / 41 cm
An evocative polychrome wooden sculpture representing Death in the guise of a skeletal monk, a powerful embodiment of the European Memento Mori tradition. The figure stands in a dramatically animated pose, enveloped in a dark monastic habit secured by a knotted cord. Its exposed skull, skeletal hands and feet contrast strikingly with the deeply carved, flowing folds of the garment.
In one hand, Death holds a long scythe, the traditional instrument symbolising the inevitable end of human existence. In the other, a delicate lantern containing a candle alludes to the fragile and fleeting nature of earthly life.
The expressive carving, carefully modelled drapery and restrained dark polychromy reflect the dramatic visual language of Central European Baroque religious sculpture.
The work retains an aged surface with visible wear, creating a compelling contrast between the pale skeletal elements and the dark monastic robe.
An atmospheric and highly decorative example of religious allegorical sculpture, appealing to collectors of European sacred art, Vanitas imagery and historical Memento Mori objects.
The statue’s overall dimensions are 16.1 inches (41 cm) high, 7.9 inches (20 cm) wide, and 6.3 inches (16 cm) deep.
Condition: The statue is in good condition with no damage besides age-related wear. Please see the enclosed images.
