The inclined backplate is crowned by a small trefoil-ended cross and features a prominent pierced quatrefoil cross set within a circular framework. Its shaped, scalloped outline and finely incised borders lend the composition a distinctive Gothic character. The lower section is particularly elaborate, incorporating an intricate arrangement of scrolling foliage, floral rosettes and pierced ornamental details. Alternating red and green glass cabochons enrich the gilded-toned metalwork, creating an attractive interplay of colour, light and decorative relief. The lectern stands upon gracefully curved scroll feet, with a shaped book-resting ledge and an open rear support designed to hold a substantial liturgical volume at a convenient reading angle. Combining Gothic religious symbolism with Renaissance-inspired ornamental metalwork, the piece reflects the revival of medieval ecclesiastical design that flourished throughout Europe during the late nineteenth century. Its substantial proportions, refined decorative treatment and warm aged brass surface make it a distinguished example of historicist church furnishings, suitable for display within a collection of European religious art and ecclesiastical antiques.

General: The overall height when open is 17.5 inches (44.5 cm).
