Pair of Angel Statues | 18th Century Wooden Cherubs 17.1"
An expressive pair of antique (18th century) carved wooden angels depicted kneeling in reverent adoration, their graceful figures forming a harmonious and visually balanced composition. Each angel is represented with youthful, delicately modelled facial features, softly flowing hair and large feathered wings extending dramatically outward. The first angel joins its hands in prayer, while its companion bows its head and crosses its hands over the chest in a gesture of humility and devotion. Their elegantly draped garments fall in deeply carved, rhythmic folds, revealing the sculptor's interest in movement, anatomy and expressive form. The finely articulated wings, with individually defined feathers, provide a striking decorative counterpoint to the serene faces. The sculptures display a warm brown surface with attractive tonal variations and darker recesses that emphasise the depth of the carving. The composition reflects the enduring influence of Baroque religious sculpture in Central / Southern Europe and was probably originally intended to flank an altar, tabernacle or sacred image. A visually compelling pair of devotional sculptures, distinguished by their complementary gestures, substantial wings and strong architectural presence.
