Heinz Warneke | Abstract Bird in Flight Sculpture | 22.4"
An elegant modernist sculpture in polished brass, conceived as a dynamic arrangement of elongated, interlocking organic forms. The composition evokes the movement of a bird in flight, with sweeping upward curves, sharply tapering extremities and a central configuration of fluid, sculptural volumes. Its carefully balanced silhouette creates a striking impression of movement and weightlessness. The highly polished brass surface accentuates the interplay of light and shadow, while the restrained rectangular wooden base provides a visual counterbalance to the expressive vertical composition. The sculpture displays characteristics associated with mid-20th-century organic abstraction. It has been tentatively attributed to Heinz Warneke (1895–1983), the German-born American sculptor celebrated for his animal subjects and accomplished treatment of sculptural materials. A distinctive decorative and sculptural work, suitable for a collection of modernist art or twentieth-century design.
