St Anne Teaching the Virgin Mary Meerschaum | 1800s Antique | 15.9"
An elegant nineteenth-century devotional sculptural group depicting Saint Anne instructing the young Virgin Mary in reading, a traditional Christian subject known as The Education of the Virgin. The composition captures a tender moment of maternal guidance and spiritual instruction. Saint Anne, dressed in flowing classical robes and a long veil, gently supports an open book while the young Virgin Mary rests affectionately against her, her hands placed upon the pages. Particularly noteworthy is the refined treatment of the figures' serene faces, delicately arranged hair and elaborate drapery. The garments are enriched with finely executed floral and scrolling ornamentation, demonstrating considerable attention to decorative detail. The sculpture's ivory-white appearance and soft, matte surface enhance the delicacy of its modelling. Its solid construction and relatively light weight are compatible with soft mineral material meerschaum. The integral architectural pedestal bears the incised signature “S. Marchi”, connecting the work with the nineteenth-century sculptural publisher Salvatore Marchi, active in France. The harmonious composition, restrained emotional expression and accomplished modelling reflect the historicist taste of nineteenth-century European religious sculpture.
