An impressive Baroque polychromed terracotta sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary (Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows) in a moment of profound spiritual emotion, her face turned heavenward and her hands gathered in prayer against her chest. The figure is distinguished by the dramatic movement of its garments. A richly coloured blue mantle, animated by deep and vigorously modelled folds, envelops the body and contrasts with the warm red tones of the flowing dress. A pale veil frames the Virgin's delicately modelled face, whose upward gaze conveys an expression of sorrow, devotion and spiritual contemplation. The sculpture reflects the theatrical movement and emotional intensity characteristic of the European Baroque tradition, particularly in Southern European religious art. The polychromy, displaying blue, red, green and cream pigments, gives the work a distinctive visual richness. Its naturally aged appearance, with areas of abrasion and exposed terracotta, contributes to its historic character. Modelled in hollow terracotta, the sculpture retains its integral base and an extensively hollowed rear, consistent with traditional ceramic sculptural construction. A compelling example of devotional sculpture, notable for its expressive facial treatment, dramatic drapery and substantial scale.
