An elegant and expressive wooden sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, conceived in the devotional tradition of Central European Baroque art. The Virgin stands in a graceful, gently animated pose, dressed in a muted red gown and a flowing blue mantle enriched with gilded borders. Her delicately modelled face, softly parted lips and contemplative gaze convey a sense of tenderness and spiritual reflection. The Christ Child, seated upon His mother's arm, turns towards her with an affectionate upward gaze, establishing an intimate dialogue between the two figures. Mary's extended free hand lends the composition a particularly engaging sense of movement. The deeply carved, sweeping folds of the mantle create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, characteristic of Baroque sculptural expression. The sculpture retains an attractive polychrome surface in traditional Marian colours, with visible patination and age-related wear. A charming and visually compelling example of European religious woodcarving, distinguished by its expressive faces, graceful composition and richly articulated drapery.
