Virgin Mary Wooden Statue | 1700s Antique | 30” / 77 cm
An impressive antique wooden sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception, standing triumphantly upon the terrestrial globe and the serpent, traditional symbols of her victory over original sin. The Virgin is represented in an elegant, gently swaying pose, her head inclined and both arms extended in a gesture of grace and compassion. Her flowing robes and richly folded blue mantle create a dynamic sculptural composition characteristic of the Central European Baroque tradition. Particularly noteworthy is the expressive globe beneath her feet, encircled by a serpent and accompanied by the crescent moon, reinforcing the sculpture's distinctive Marian iconography. The work retains extensive traces of historic polychromy, with atmospheric blue, cream and muted gold tones. The naturally aged surface, areas of paint loss and visible wear contribute to its evocative devotional character. A striking example of European religious sculpture, combining elegant Baroque movement, symbolic richness and an appealing historic surface.
